Winter Frenzy

So I decided to add to the frenzy...  I may have found the one dress you absolutely must have this season.  Honestly, I am pretty sure that it is one of the fastest selling items I have ever tracked.  It is already sold out on Net-A-Porter and down to those last few pieces on LaGarconne and at Barneys. Saks and ShopBop seem to have missed the boat and not ordered it, or maybe they got lucky and will be getting it in a later shipment to fully benefit from the hoards of waitlisted buyers. I did find one place where they seem to have a full size run, but can imagine it won't last long...rush to Hejfina.com and do not hesitate to purchase.  It is kind of like renting an apartment in NYC.  If you like it, you better sign the papers on the spot or it will be long gone by the next day.

Don't worry, I am going to tell you what it is...that is after I keep you in suspense for a while.  As you know by now, I don't care about fashion rules.  I am big into buying now and wearing now.  That doesn't mean you need to keep shopping the Fall sales and should forgo all the great items hitting the stores now.  It just means that if you buy a Spring piece and you just adore it, then I bet if you use just a bit of imagination, you can figure out how to work into your February wardrobe...  This is why I love white...not ivory, but snow or just slightly off-white!  OK not NYC snow, but you get my drift (no pun intended).  Now of course I am not suggesting that you break out your white sandals in the dead of winter or even that you carry your summer white bag, I am just letting you know that there are some alabaster items that allow you to throw caution to the wind.  Sure white shirts are a no-brainer and I love white jeans with just about everything, but would you dare to wear a white dress on a 20 degree night?  I am here to tell you to go for it!!!  Top it with a fab little black blazer or better yet a cropped leather jacket or if you happen to know how to shop for vintage, a white fur peice could be stunning.  Go for opaque black tights and black booties and you will look winter chic.  Ladies, please put something on your legs.  It drives me crazy when I see bare legged women in the frigid cold.  You don't look stylish, you just look silly!!!!

So back to the dress you will be clamoring to get...not only is it the perfect shade of white, but it is ruched simplicity!  It is edgy and sexy and feminine and sexy and oh yes, did I mention sexy? It needs to be on every It Girl's It List!!!  It is beyond flattering (don't ask me how I know).  It is rocker chic. It is sculptural.  It is sensual.  It is just plain fab!!!! You will be pinching yourself if you don't buy it and if you are lucky enough to get your hands on it, you will regret leaving it in your closet until June (I think that is usually when it gets warm around here these days). 

Drumroll please...the dress of the season just could be, the gotta-have-it, frenzy-creating, almost sold out, Goddess Jersey Dress by none other then It Designer, Alexander Wang.

Mayle For Sale

I found an investment piece you shouldn't live without...  You can never have to many go-to black dresses and this stunner from Mayle could be one of the most versatile and timeless I have found.  The sultry shape is absolutely beautiful, though perfect for work and the vintage-inspired lace overlay adds a texture and richness that makes it look like you really splurged.

It is beyond all-purpose and can take you from day to evening without a thought. It is on sale for just $387 on Net-A-Porter.  If you are anything other than a 4 or 6, you are out of luck, though you can always try the Nolita store (Its called the Gia Dress)...you never know!!!

Lanvin For Less

As per usual, I had some time to kill on Wednesday in between my showroom appointments so I decided to seek shelter from the downpour at Kirna Zabete.  Now of course Kirna Zabete is usually just a quick drive-by on my covet list as the likes of Nina Ricci and Giambattista Valli are sadly out of my personal reach... However, I do have one client who is just designer obsessed, so it has become a little Soho enclave for us and ended up being the perfect pit stop.  As I was salivating over the newest Lanvin (I dream about the Alber Elbaz creations), I happened upon the most amazing find, the perfect Lanvin ruched t-shirt dress for only $295.  Honestly, I thought Lanvin tees were an urban myth as they are not easy to find... The dress is just the right length and can by worn softly gathered around your body or fully extended to a sleek, body-skimming shape and belted...versatile and chic and a definite must-have if like me you just gotta have some Alber. 

The actual impetus for today's column is less about Lanvin and more about the economy.  As the deep discounts dry up and they will, I predict that we will start to see more opening price offerings (not necessarily diffusion lines) from the luxury designer set.  Sure, stores will be more promotional then ever in an attempt to attract an keep buyers, but the days of the 70% off sale is coming to an end (at least until May).  Since the euro is still killing us with $800 shoes and $2000 bags, something has to give...  The world's best will begin to broader their price structure to maintain what THEY covet most, the fashionista consumer. 

I recently blogged (My Old Favorite Tee) about Alexander Wang's fab new tee line, T by Alexander Wang, with most prices under $100.  If you think about it, you will realize how genius this strategy is.  It used to be, you had to buy the fragrance to own a little piece of the designer dream, but as times toughen, we as consumers want more than just a whiff; we want to maintain our designer-driven, luxury lifestyle, but for less.  We want our rents to come down to an acceptable level, we are clamoring for the death of the $40 entree and more than anything we want to look stylish while we prioritize our spending. Smart brands like Alexander Wang and yes, even Lanvin understand this and thus will continue to give us what we want...fab fashion but at a price!!!!

Some other brands have also started to offer some kinder prices.  Are you sitting down? Prada has brought back the famous nylon backpack that put them on the map for just $545 at Barneys...less expensive than most of their clutches and way more bag. I am loving the white!!! Lanvin is also offering the coolest bag of the season, a whimsical, printed cotton number for $695, also at Barneys. They are so much fun...one is better than the next!!!

        

Since I am quite inspired by these designer finds, I vow to scour the stores for you this season to find more of these great "brand extensions", as I am sure there will be many...so stay tuned for more easy ways to stay oh-so "in-style" and to continue to feed your love of those lusty labels...I don't know about you, but I love it when my dreams are within my reach!!!!

All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun

                   

Am I the only one who thinks this is by far our worst winter in years?  I keep threatening to move to a warmer climate and am so looking forward to making a trip to the West Coast sometime in the very near future.  Eighty degree weather in January, a sun that sets just a bit later, that easy, breezy LA style...I crave it!!!!  I also crave fashion that is just a bit lighthearted, whimsical perhaps and that makes people smile.  That said, I am not talking about some cheery print from some nice department store brand; I am talking about something that people just don't see very often, that has some edge and yes, boatloads of personality. 

Now as you know by now, I rarely like to cover just one item.  It just isn't my thing.  I can leave that to the Daily Candys of the world.  I prefer to share a bigger piece of myself and to curate the ideas, brands and products that affect me.  I don't just want to throw stuff at you because I have a column quota or because I need to fill a page.  However, once in a very blue moon, I do come across that ONE piece that just simply tells the story. 

This playful dress from Haleh is that piece... I swear it was made for me.  Sequins (check); rock-n-roll (check); girly (check); tons of fun (check)!!!! It comes in four great colors.  I particularly love the turquoise, though the other three are also amazing and it is oh-so wallet-friendly at only $285.  It is just what the doctor ordered for my LA trip as it has just the right amount of edge and effervescence. Perfect for a stroll down Robertson or a night on the town, it packs a quiet confidence...  It is rare that I find something so unique, so cool and so spirited.

Haleh Nematzadeh is a Persian-born, NY-based designer, so perhaps it is strange that I feel a connection to LA when I see this dress, but remember, this article is about feeling cheerful, having fun and showing your personality, not really about a place.  I would feel just as great in this fab piece in NYC, in London, in Miami or anywhere else that I happen to be.  That is really the key.  If you are going to spend your money right now, don't play it safe!!!  Buy fashion that lifts your mood, that makes you feel good and that delights others ...  It is time for us to emerge from our endless winter and to remember that just because it is gloomy outside, that we don't have to feel gloomy inside.  I don't know about you, but I am planning on having a whole lotta fun!!!!

Style Mavens -Flower Power

Well TGOS readers, you seem to be enamored with Style Mavens, so you have know officially bumped up its frequency to every Wednesday.  Luckily, I am absolutely loving writing about my fabulous friends and colleagues...so much fun!!!

This week I decided to feature my friend Andrew.  I mean how cute is he?  We officially met on that glorious flight home from Milan after fashion week about 2 years ago.  The return flight is sort of this mix of pure joy that you get to finally leave the grayest of the fashion capitals and sheer exhaustion from a week of fashion shows and parties.  OK, if you are thinking how glamorous, well trust me, it wears off after about your sixth trip.  You see at that point I was probably on my 20th.  Now, if you are wondering what this has to do with Andrew, well I am going to tell you... I remember walking onto the plane (probably the crappy Delta flight) and there he was...great sunglasses and some fab "fashionista" outfit and pure joy.  This joy however wasn't due to our impending departure; instead it was the euphoria I used to get in my early days of Italian jaunts and it reminded me of my love for fashion.  I plopped down next to him and we had a great talk, about the shows, about the magazine I worked for, about life...

Though we don't see each other often, I recently bumped into him at my friend Donna's annual, legendary Bday bash and was reminded once again why I love him.  Again, how cute is he?  Anyway, I knew then and there that I wanted to feature him, so as per usual I trolled Facebook and found this perfect photo.  I absolutely adore this look for men...fab floral shirt and cool shades.  It is sort of the male version of Boho Chic.  Florals are the perfect Spring statement that any guy can pull off.  If you know how to rock fashion then your options this Spring are boundless, but if you are more comfortable in a Tommy Bahama (yikes) look, then it is time to update and experiment with some of this seasons easy-to-wear styles.  Andrew's shirt is from Dolce & Gabbana and has a subdued easy feel that any guy can pull off. Their new crop of flower inspired prints (at Dolce stores) are bold and masculine and could be this seasons must-buys for even the least fashion conscious man.  I mean how can you go wrong in a great print shirt with jeans and yes cool shades a la Andrew?  I also am crazy about their Floral Ombre Tux Jacket available at Neiman Marcus.  I can actually see Brendan, our first Style Maven in this stunner.  If Dolce is a bit aggressive for you, of course I found a milder option, such as this great blue floral from Roda at Barneys. You can make the same style statement with a paisley pattern if flowers are not your thing. Etro and "lowish" option Robert Graham are offering some of the best this season. 

             

So, Andrew just makes me smile and flowers just make me smile, so of course any adorable guy in a floral shirt will be my new source of joy this season.  If you know Andrew, make sure to always catch his enthusiasm and let him remind you of all of the reasons why you love whatever it is that you love!!!! And, remember, lose the somber attitude and start to look forward to spring...embrace "Flower Power"

A Shopaholic's Journal -Tickle Me Hot Pink

I have always had a passionate love affair with pink!!!  To me it is and always will be a perfect neutral.  Now that said, I always gravitate towards the softer shades of blush, petal and orange tinged tones of salmon.  I sometimes find the fuchsias and magentas to be a little harsh on my skin tone.  I do however always feel powerfully attracted to these dramatic, hot pink tones and therefore am beyond excited that Spring '09 is the season of these more intense hues.  Hot pink is the key bright for the season and it is being manifested in every way, shape and form.  If had the cash to burn ladies, these are the pink stunners I would be rushing to own...

Of course I am going to start with shoes, glorious shoes... I am oh-so obsessed with the Louboutin C'est Moi Shoe Boots in vibrant fuchsia on Net-A-Porter.  They would of course be my insane splurge. Wear them with dresses and this season's slew of cropped pants and shorts.  Don't ruin them with a long pair of pants or by mixing with another commanding color girls...they demand to be the focus and to be seen! Since a shocking pink shoe boot for spring is on the fairly aggressive side of fashion, I am also coveting these perfectly, feminine, hot pink Manolo Blahnik Patent Sandals from Neiman Marcus.    Remember when Manolos were the ultimate aspirational shoes?  Now at $685, they almost seem like a bargain in a sea of shoes over $800.  I still love and wear my favorite cherry red patent Manolo "strappies" which I have had for several seasons...these are also the perfect versatile investment!!!  You know I need my flats and I found the perfect flashy little hot pink pair from a wallet-friendly line I just discovered, Bloch London.  I love it when brands do one thing and do it beyond well...Bloch is that brand, as they specialize in ballerina flats, one more covetable than the next!!  The one I desire is under $200 on Cusp.com.

                              

Now shoes of course are always a safe way to play with color, but if you really want to pop this season, try one of these amazing electric pink bags...  At the top of my want list is the YSL Large Tribute Tote in Magenta patent available at Saks.  It is a flawless combination of classic-meets-trendy, so at under $1,000, I think it is a smart investment piece.  You see, a great bag never goes out of fashion.  I don't believe in the It Bag concept...in fact, I just started to carry my Gucci Baguettes again and I get compliments left and right.  Next on the "I Gotta Have It" list is this cool chick bag from Kooba.  I adore the zipper details, again plays right into my fetish for girly, rocker looks.  Its called the Ryder Tote in case you want to shop around, but if you just want to click and buy, NeimanMarcus.com has is now for just under $600.  I crave big bags, that can accommodate all of the stuff I need to run around with daily and the perfect snakeskin hobo from Beirn will definitely do the trick.  It is sturdy, yet supple and packs that hot pick punch (it comes in several colors).  You can get it at Calypso for the palatable price of $340.  It will become your go-to carry all!

                        

As you can see, I am slowly easing you into the big color WOW statement...forget the LBD this season and rock a LPD instead!!!  My absolute fav is from my one of my true loves, Alexander McQueen.  His asymmetrical, silk fuchsia number is so to-die that it almost makes me salivate... What can I say, I have a Pavlovian reaction to fashion. If you can afford the hefty price tag, click away on Net-A-Porter!!!  Now of course, if you are being budget conscious like me, then I found some amazing easier-to-swallow versions.  I am coveting 3 in particular, a girly, ruffled, little number from DVF ($385), a sweet, strapless frock from Alice & Olivia ($330) and a perfect, rosette-adorned, casual option from Bella James ($101), all on Cusp.com, my new "lowish" go-to.

       

I always save my favorite for last.  If there was one hot pink item I could own, it would be this crazy good hot pink stunner from emerging designer Alex Elliott.  Her snakeskin bags rock and are this season's must-buy at only $595.  She is just starting out so contact her at info@alexelliott.com.

I don't know about you, but just dreaming about owning all of these vibrant pieces has put a big smile on my face.  A little shot of hot pick is just what the doctor ordered!!! No wonder everyone is fawning over my fuchsia snakeskin Gucci Baguette... So girls rock some big pink this season, in fact go ahead and rock it now and tell the world you are one cool, confident woman!!!!

More Wonderand Fashion Flea Market

So when I got back last night from the fabulous Wonderland Fashion Flea Market, I have to admit I was a wee bit exhausted and excited and depleted and encouraged and...  The truth is that I wasn't sure I was going to have a story in me, but as per usual I was compelled to write.  You see not only was I surrounded by awe-inspiring talent today, but also by friends, family and business colleagues who continue to to amaze me, motivate me and most importantly make me smile!!!  So I want to express my deepest gratitude to those who braved this brutal winter and to the brands who took a leap of faith to support something that I deeply care about and believe in...

You see my big picture dream is to build this into something bigger, something important, something that helps emerging talent weather the storm and that may just excite the consumer enough to get them to part with just a little cash from time to time. Luckily many share my passion for this dream and today that was supported more than ever!!!!  Fashion editors, fashion marketing gurus, publicists and just us plain old folk like me who love design reinforced my vision...

So I quickly want to share some of yesterday's highlights... Hooch Bags by The Elegant Thrifter (ex-fashion editor Stan Williams) and one of his muses the BEYOND fab Bevy Smith served up one of the most creative new lines I have seen in a long time.  The idea is genius!!!!  He finds these amazing vintage bags and basically "hooches" them up by filling them with clever little gift items such as mini-bar bottles of booze, funny money, candy, cookies, faux jewels and so many other must-have little finds.  I think I was the most intrigued with his Marilyn Bag.  This jewel green, broach laden, little clutch was so me.  Oh did I mention they are all named and inspired by someone famous...Lindsay and Britney and Jennifer and Kathryn were all there.  The bags range in price from $25-$400 for a vintage Louis Vuitton.  They are perfect for individual and corporate gifts and could replace the tired party gift bag.  His section was also where the action was...so much fun!!!!

Next was the unbelievably chic Natalie Kates and her to-die, one of a kind jewelry.  She finds amazing  materials in foreign countries such as amber and lava rock and creates these BIG, BOLD pieces.  That said, my favorites were actually made from hardware store chain link...so freakin cool!!! She is one of the execs at Q Models, so we all need to thank her from bringing in the eye candy.  I have never seen so many good looking men at a shopping event.

My favorite collection of the day, came from Alex Elliott.  Her newbie skin bag line is just what the doctor ordered in the deep of winter.  Just imagine the most lux, bright, jewel-toned clutches.  The turquoise, yellow and hot pink are must-haves.  Her metal snake buckle belts are also major statement pieces.  I barely got out of there without splurging on the ivory one.  Oh, I say splurge lightly, as they are only $250.  The bags retail for $195-$595...yes for real skin!!!  Alex is also one of the loveliest people you will ever meet so she was a pleasure to have as a participant.

The next brand is Nathan & Moe, designed by my friend Nancy Leibowitz.  Since I am on a snake theme, I have to say I am in love with her serpant rings ($95). They come in gold and silver and are the perfect statement ring if you have cocktail ring burnout.  I also adore some of her nature-inspired pieces.  The line is delicate, feminine and somewhat refined and was a great addition to the flea market. 

Haute Hippie was also there en force.  Theirs was one of the hottest sections of the day.  Their cozy cardigans, embellished tees and my favorite piece of the day, a peach studded tunic/dress were the big winners!!!  Check out my column about them from a couple of weeks ago to learn more.

Last and definitely not least was the gang from the best store in the Hamptons, Bellhaus.  If you haven't been yet, make it a point next time you are out there.  It is right in Wainscott, where the old surf shop used to be.  You can't miss it.  They came ready to dazzle with amazing Nina Ricci frocks and some of the most killer shoes of the season.  The owner Shawn Bell has impeccable taste and a keen eye for what women want.  They are the Hamptons answer to Jeffrey!!!!  Shawn couldn't make it as he is buying away in Paris, but Hector his fearless second in command made the haul all the way from the East End and we loved having him.

My First Official Day Off...

From the blog that is...  I decided to take a mini-break since today is the Wonderland Fashion Flea Market which will be consuming me completely.  So after 67 consecutive days of 600 word plus stories, I Nancy "Blogger", as my friend the fabulous Bevy Smith calls me, am giving the key pad a rest!!!!

Truly Obscene Deals!!!!

As you can imagine, I am on just about every store/brand email list.  It drives me crazy, but is of course a necessary evil as I pride myself on being on top of what it is happening in the ever changing shopping landscape.  Sure, I always share with my clients, but I thought given our economic climate, I would help some of my favorite little stores spread the wealth.

I wrote about Suite Orchard on the LES (remember the store with the adorable Frenchie) a while back.  They have great merchandise and now are offering an amazing sale/deal.  Everything in the store is 50%-75% off and on top of it, they will give you $25 towards your next purchase for EVERY $250 you spend. The $25 gift offer is only good through the end of January.

Another one of my newish favs, is the Iisli store at 25 Bond Street.  This is one of those fairly ubiquitous BG-Neimans-Saks brands that I think suffers after being cherry picked by department store buyers.  They tend to make it look a little "older", so when I discovered their new store a few months ago, I was blown away.  The collection is not only youthful, but the some of the individual pieces are to-die.  If aren't familiar with the brand,  it is primarily knitwear and they design some of the most wearable, yet inspired dresses, skirts and tops.  The current Fall sale is "silly" good!!!!  Dresses and jackets are $100, skirts and pants are $65, cardigans are $75, tees are $45 and their gorgeous sequined pieces are $150.  These prices are at a fraction of normal retail.  The sale ends tomorrow ladies, so RUN!  You will be so happy you did.

If online shopping is more your thing then my favorite site LaGarconne.com is having one hell of a sale.  Let me tell you, I have been shopping on LaGarconne for a long time and I have never seen them go as low as 60%-70% off...  Some of my favorite brands, like Heimstone, Mischen and Future Classics and Zucca are in this "low" bracket and although sizing is limited, I promise this could be your one and only chance to scoop up some of these amazing finds at such discounts... Unheard of!!!!

Of course, I am going to add a little shameless self-promotion and continue to remind you about my Wonderland Fashion Flea Market this Sunday.  I have yet to release any info about the participants, so I am going to do a little sneak-peak just for my loyal readers...  Perhaps you will find some great deals on the likes of Jason Wu (yes, Michelle Obama's Jason Wu), Derek Lam, Doo Ri, Alexander McQueen, Haute Hippie (the clothes are so fab), Valentino, YSL, Gucci, Bottega.  You may also score some new brands like Alex Elliot handbags (her skin clutches are must-haves) and Hooch Bags by The Elegant Thrifter (so cool, you just have to see them) for obscene prices.  Now not everything is going to be "low" as the event is not intended to be a discount event.  Just know that we are quite cognizant of the climate and will behave accordingly!!!

Smooth Operations

On Tuesday, I decided to walk the Project Trade Show as I was hoping to find some new, inspiring brands…   Although there were a handful that hit homeruns, the bulk of the exhibitors were still showing that dated LA, highly embellished tee shirt, hoodie, overdone denim look.  Hasn’t it seen its day?  Do men really still dress like that?  Granted I don’t get out of the city much these days, so I am probably out of touch with what is happening in Des Moines (nothing against Des Moines), but come on, if you aren’t having a Bromance with Brody Jenner then there has to be something else.  Luckily there is…

One of my favorite discoveries was a brand called Operations.  Now, somehow I managed to miss them in Soho (they have been there since 2004).  I admit I don’t walk Mercer Street very often…in fact I pretty much don’t look to Soho for novelty anymore, so my bad!  Anyway, they just opened a store in the MPD across from the Apple store, so I ran over there on Wednesday to check it out and just like my Project impression, it was love at first sight!!! 

Operations was founded by 3 college friends, Johannes Mahmood, Matteo Gottardi and Michael Leen.  I had the pleasure of meeting Michael at the show and Mahmood in the store and let me tell you, they are as charming as the line. Their original concept was to import authentic workwear and uniforms from other countries with which they developed a loyal following.  Realizing that they were onto something bigger, they started designing full collections using these very pieces as the driving force.

They created a masculine, modern utilitarian aesthetic, with careful attention to maintaining original details, such as oversized pockets and uniform-like buttons and replacing the often heavier, fabrics with softer felted wools and Italian tweeds. The overall effect is sexy-immigrant meets modern hipster.  The standouts are the outerwear, sportjackets and shakets. The silhouettes are contemporary and youthful, enhancing a rugged, manly-man meets “modernista” vibe.  I can see this guy frequenting the multitude of speakeasy establishments taking hold of NYC.  Now that said, the collection is quite versatile as well and would be quite a nice update to some of your more mundane work outfits or your down and dirty weekend brunch gear.  The current Fall collection is on sale for 40% off at their stores, though they have some great pieces that are as low as 60..  Oh and how can I forget, they manufacture in the good ole USA…you know how I love that!!!!!

Now as you know, I don’t really like to talk about product you cannot buy now, but I do want to let you know that they are launching a lower priced collection which will hit stores in September, 2009 and will be sure to be all the rage!  Trust me guys you will love this line!!!! The Gift Of Style Guide To Finding A Man

OK single girls, this one is for you... Have you ever heard of Cablight.com?  Cablight.com was founded by dating industry guru, Nancy Slotnick.  She has been helping singles meet their perfect match since well before online dating was even a concept.  She has appeared on Oprah,  in Cosmopolitan, in Glamour (just to name a few) and has written a successful book called Turn Your Cablight On.  Her company focuses on "lovelife management" and is founded on the principle that to meet that perfect someone you need to simply become available...to turn your Cablight on, just like a New York City taxicab.  She recently launched a private social network for women who are interested not only in honing their dating skills, but also who want to help each other by sharing dating tips and yes, even the available men they know. 

The launch event was last Tuesday and I was honored to be asked to be a guest speaker.  Now don't get excited, I wasn't chosen because she wanted me to share my over 20 years of dating experience, as interesting as this may be (nor will I share it here)...  Instead she wanted me to talk about style and how style choices impact how brightly your cablight shines.  The format was clever, as we (Dramatics Hair Salon, where the event was held and I) actually performed a dating makeover on one 30-something woman.  The goal wasn't to illustrate that looking good is the only way to meet a man, instead it was about confidence and how your exterior can either boost or detract from this powerful afrodisiac.  The transformation was Dramatic (pun intended)... This young woman went from completely blending into the crowd to a beaming ray of light.  Again, sure her haircut was phenomenal, her makeup flawless (great job Dramatics team) and my style choices were perfect, if I do say so myself, but the real change was in the way she carried herself.  She held her shoulders back, she couldn't stop smiling and the effect was contagious.  Simple message ladies...if you feel good in your skin and are happy with your appearance, you will be radiant, you will smile and you will attract others!!!!!

Now of course, knowing what to wear on a date can be daunting, so I will highlight some of the tips I shared at the meeting.  Men are visual, though they do not pay attention to detail; they will never remember what you were wearing, only how you look in what you are wearing.  They like to see a little skin, but never bare too much as the imagination is a powerful thing. They like to have a sense of what your body looks like, so subtly highlight your best assets.  Try some color.  Don’t over accessorize; you want to standout, not what you are wearing. Always look feminine. Don’t try something new on a first date.  Most importantly never wear something you are not 100% comfortable in; in other words, don't wear 5" heels if you can't walk in them. Yes, I am generalizing, so if any of my male readers take issue with any of these suggestions, please make your comments non-life threatening.

Here is one more tip that can be used not only to help you make appropriate social life style choices, but can be transferred to anything you do.  Understand your environment and your audience and dress appropriately.  This doesn't mean, lose your personal flare, it just means to be cognizant of how you present yourself in any situation.  Of course, there will be times when you may not have enough information, so my advice is simple.  Choose 2-3 go-to outfits that you really feel great in.  When you know you look good, you feel good. Your confidence alone will make a major impact!!!

Style Mavens -Metal Glam

WOW... The launch of Style Mavens was a big day for my blog.  It seems as suspected, like me, you are inspired by the people you know and love!  Sure, we are inundated by editorial commentary that tells how we should dress, what we should desire and what we must have, but most of the time isn't it the people who are closest to us who truly elevate our fashion consciousness?

My new friend Erika is an unassuming Style Maven...my favorite kind.  I recently met her and what I immediately noticed about her was not only her radiant personality, but also how comfortable she seems to be in her own skin.  I always try to help my clients see past just looking good... I emphasize feeling good and being in tune with one's self... Only then can one really truly find a sense of personal style.  You see, you don't have to be a trendsetter or even a trend-adopter to be a fashionable person, you simply have to know what works for you and ultimately what enhances your already deep-rooted confidence. 

When Erika and I became friends on Facebook, I noticed some great photos of her that reinforced what I already thought about her...self-assured and trend-savvy.  I chose this photo of her for several reasons.  First and foremost I adore her metal-toned, crystal embellished DVF gown.  As you know, metallics are in big time this season (actually in my book, they are never out) and this dress is a perfect pre-season representation of what it to come.  Sure, what we will see is less embellished more flat finish, high shine, but nonetheless this dress makes a big glam statement!  I have and always will be a big fan of what I call "sophisticated bling"...sequins and strategically placed beading never go out of fashion.  A little touch of drama is always needed to make a personal style statement and can be as subtle as the perfect chandelier earrings or as quietly over-the-top as Erika's dress.  You are probably thinking how can something be "quietly over-the-top"...isn't that a contradiction?  Well, the sheer genius of this dress is the color.  The steel gray hue adds depth to the embellishment, quiets it and makes it seem less pop star bling and more polished shimmer. 

The dress also looks great on her.  My mother always told me that if you've got it, flaunt it... I teach my clients this all the time.  Now this doesn't mean taking it to the extreme, but if you have great legs, wear tastefully shorter skirts; if you have a great butt, find the perfect jeans and if you have what so many women long for, a little something up top, then a hint (not a vulgar amount) of cleavage goes a long way.  DVF's quintessential wrap dresses look amazing on women who have been blessed with a great shape and this silhouette was the perfect choice for Erika...you go girl!!!

If you love the idea of little radiance or luster in your life, then here are some other metallic stunners you can buy now and wear into the spring/summer.  If you want to save some money, there are some great shimmery options online.  A silver Graham & Spencer dress is on sale for $250 on Net-A-Porter...amazingly versatile (dress down or up) and seasonless. There is also a simple navy sequin tank from Velvet for $91 from Cusp.com (Neiman Marcus's contemporary site)...wear it now over a long sleeve white tee, with a great little jacket and jeans and then break it out on its own once the weather changes.  If you don't think luminosity is for you, then I suggest this amazing charcoal Phillip Lim Ruffle Dress also from Cusp.com.  A deep gray tone is the perfect way to softly emulate a metallic feel.

A Shopaholic’s Journal –Skin Obsessed

I have to admit a consistent craving for animal prints.  I love my leopard and have always been fond of any pattern that resembles a snake. To my delight, Spring 2009 is shaping up to be the season of python.  It was all over the runways in a multitude of forms and perhaps is the new black or the new white, depending on which warm weather neutral you fancy. That being said, I do practice some degree of restraint when it comes to purchasing feline or reptile-inspired items… Come on ladies you only need one or two great statement pieces to proudly do this permanent fashion trend justice…a great shoe, an It bag, the perfect belt or a sophisticated dress or blouse. Too much is just overkill!!!

In true shopaholic form, I have already found the untouchable pieces that I will dream about and those that will satiate both my appetite and my desire to spend less.  Lets start with the bags that I am dying to own… Gucci and Nancy Gonzalez top the list.  These two bags are the real deal and will set you back a pretty penny.  That said, they are so fab that I just want to make you aware of their very existence.  The Gucci Pelham Python Hobo, available at Neiman Marcus is almost $5,000.  The ash color and hardware details appeal directly to my semi-rocker chic sensibility, but is also so beyond versatile that it could easily become a seasonless wardrobe staple.  The Nancy Gonzalez Croco-Python Tote is equally investment worthy.  I adore the rounded handles and the pale color.  It is sensual, yet practical and would be my go-to with all of the nudes this season. It is available at Saks and retails for $3,200…a Nancy Gonzalez bargain. 

OK, OK…I know you probably can’t afford such a splurge right now, so if you want to get the look for less (god that sounded so “magaziny”), spend a little time on eBay.  I found several good faux options that I would buy in a NY minute.  The first is the Lauren Python Print Satchel from Big Buddha. The soft multi-toned palette is perfect and will work well with just about anything you wear this season.  The second is from a line called Sondra Roberts. This budget-friendly number hits two key Spring trends, python and ruffles and I think the orange color is a must-have!  You can probably get your hands on them for about $60 each if you bid intelligently.  If you don’t like the eBay frenzy, run to Club Monaco.  Their Kira Python Hobo is a great replication of the Nancy Gonzalez version for about $400 and their bold colored Thalia Python Clutch for $129 will add some cheer to any outfit.  Now for one of my secrets…Eye Candy on Lafayette just above Houston has amazing faux everything for about $50-$80.  Go to the store as the website is limited.

                               

I already featured my absolute favorite Python shoes of the season in last week’s A Shopaholic’s Journal, but of course, I am coveting some others as well.  I think the Sergio Rossi Gladiators available for $995 at Intermix or on Net-A-Porter are fantastic.  The rounded shape of the vamp (top of the shoe) adds a feminine touch to what is traditionally a more aggressive shoe style and I adore the carmel/ivory tone.  Now, I love my heels, but as a stylist/personal shopper, I am always on the go, so I need great flats.  The Loeffler Randall Ankle Ballerina is an absolute must-buy and at $395 at Saks, a little easier to digest.  These shoes will go with every great little dress in my closet!!! Of course, as mentioned before, flats are just about the only shoes that I think work at a lesser price point and my #1 choice is always Steve Madden.  The Skorch Snake Ballet Flat for $70 is the perfect Loeffler knock-off. Trust me, I always get compliments on my Steve Madden warm weather choices. Really no one will ever know!!!

                    

So python is not just for accessories…  I am beyond obsessed with the Prada python print silk dresses!!  If you have deep pockets they will definitely be your day-to-night outfits of choice.  Sultry, easy and oh so chic, these dresses are wardrobe builders that will always be in style.  They should be available at Prada stores in March.  Of course, since these are out of my league, I found some perfect “low” choices… Hit LaGarconne.com immediately, as they have a great Zimmerman Python Shift Dress on sale for $125.  Belt it for a great work or weekend dress!!!  Lastly, DVF as per usual, has a plethora of prints that are skin-inspired.  The Catalina Dress for $365 is the one I would purchase, as its girly shape is versatile and sophisticated.  It is also a great option if you want to break out some skin-like pieces now.

                      

One last honorable wear-now mention… The rocker-meets-uptown, Guanti Python gloves at Neiman Marcus are the perfect accessory for any self-proclaimed fashionista and at $192, how can you pass them up!!!!

Trust me, there will be so many python finds this season, so don’t despair if you can’t afford or just don’t relate to my choices.  Python is a great new basic, so use these sexy, rich-looking, skin dazzlers to up your style quotient and slither into Spring!!!!

Expose Your Inner Harem Girl

As you well know from reading my blog, I am dress obsessed!  I can’t ever get enough of these versatile, easy, feminine pieces.  If I could wear a frilly little frock every day of my life I most certainly would… That is until now.  Here comes the season of the pants.  Never before I have so embraced what I usually consider the harder to wear and the not so flattering alternative to denim.  Have you ever wondered why women still flock to Theory for their famous trousers?  There just aren’t alternatives.  Yes, I am generalizing…if you dig, you could probably find other options, but in general it has been slim pickings.  Spring 2009 promises to feed our desire for comfortable, chic dress/skirt alternatives.  Of course some of the runway trends were quite severe, but I have found a plethora of great wearable styles for you to embrace. 

Let’s start with harem pants.  They started to creep into stores last spring, but adoption was limited to the hard-core fashion set.  As with any trend, it can take some time to trickle down to the masses.   Now the most literal versions with a severe, droopy crotch can be difficult to pull off, though on the right woman (tall, thin) they will look fabulous.  More wearable options are somewhere in between harem and cargo.  I adore the Loeffler Randall, tan, cropped silhouette.  They don’t have a typical drop crotch, but the softly pleated, baggy pockets are certainly a reference to these middle eastern-inspired pants.  They are scheduled to hit Intermix next month, so watch for them.  I also adore the Mayle Rex Pants.  They too are harem-inspired, hit above the ankle and have double pleats.  I love them in Black and can imagine wearing them with my most casual or dressy pieces.  I tried them on at the store in Nolita and they are awesome!!!  LaGarconne.com has them as well if you prefer to just point/click/ship.  Of course, if you are a die-hard fashionophile, then go with the real thing.  My favs are of course from Elizabeth & James, available on ShopBop.com.  Their jersey versions are cool, casual and chic.  Finally if you want to go really “low” as in not too much investment, then the Silence & Noise knit harem pants are only $58 at Urban Outfitters. 

                     

If safari or a modern cargo are more your speed, then I recommend the following perfect options… For my big spenders, Gucci has perhaps the best selection.  Their tapered ankle versions are oh so sexy and yet, office appropriate.  Balmain’s rocker-inspired cargos, available on Net-A-porter.com are must-haves for the party set and Alexander Wang’s baggy, silk lantern trousers, the ultimate cool chick alternatives and are available now on eLuxury.com.  For my “low” shoppers try the low-rise cargos at Old Navy for $32.50.  The gray are sophisticated and clean and will be become your favorite basics.

         

So how do you wear these fantastic trouser options?  My advice is to keep it simple.  A semi-fitted knit top or feminine blouse that hits at the waist or can be tucked in and still retain a fuller shape will balance even the most extreme versions.  No tunics, unless you want to look middle heavy and bag-ladyish. I know this was a look on the catwalks, but so tough to pull off!  Keep the heels high!!!  Some of the more feminine gladiator styles or sexy sandals are the perfect counterbalance to anything cropped or ankle length.  Don’t do wedges as they will look too clunky and add more weight to your bottom half.  If you want to wear them now, use the same guidelines for the top and wear some high heeled, knee high boots.   If you must wear a jacket, watch the length…keep it cropped.  One more quick pointer…I love safari styles for evening, so dress them up!!!!

I will address some of my other favorite bottom trends at a later date, such as shorts and jumpsuits, as I think they are best left for the warmer months.  In the meantime, explore your inner harem-girl and drop your crotch or go upscale safari chic with some of the newest cargos.  Remember, style is all about experimenting, so forgo the safety of your Theory trousers and think "I Dream Of Jeannie" when making your fashion choices!!!!

Embrace The Elements

Being green and environmentally conscious permeates consumer branding these days.  Every company has a green initiative.  Of course anytime a brand attempts to be a little kinder to our earth, I am thrilled, but I often seen the insincerity in the effort, the self-serving marketing undertones… Once in a while you find a brand founded on green principles that is not only 100% authentic, but also quite amazing…. Canadian designer Dandi Maestre’s jewelry line is that rare collection…

Her beyond beautiful, sensual oversized jewelry and accessories are handmade from horn, shed antlers, ancient raw amber, exotic energy seeds, sea shells reclaimed wood and other elements.  Her passion for the environment shines not only through her use of organic elements, but also through her manipulation of those elements to create sculptural masterpieces that reflect nature’s bounty.  Dandi Maestre’s pieces are sophisticated and dramatic and outshine many of the statement jewels we saw on the Spring runways.  The collection is anti-bling, soothing, evocative and pays homage to the very shorelines, rivers, jungles and forests where her materials are cultivated. 

On her website she actually provides descriptions for the elements she frequently adapts to create her bold vision of nature and modern style.  I found this profoundly interesting so I want to share some of the environmentally friendly highlights with you… “Horn is an organic, rich and durable material. Sadly the jewelry is not readily available in NYC, though I did find one store on the UES (Lee Anderson, 988 Lexington Ave.) enlightened enough to support this untapped talent.  You can also special order the pieces on the website, DandiMaestre.com.  Prices vary from as low as $70 to as high as $700 for some of the pieces made from precious materials, but overall the collection is well-priced and well worth any expenditure. 

So, if you are pro-environment and I hope you are, Dandi Maestre is the greenest of green.  Start thinking about how you spend you money and support brands that do their part to preserve our natural resources, regardless of whether they do it for publicity or because they are true believers…either way works for me!!!!!!

My Favorite Old Tee

Do you have that one tee shirt that you just can’t part with?  I still have a sweatshirt from college that has seen better days and my favorite Smith's tee is on its last leg, yet for some reason I just can’t throw them away… Sure one is for sentimental reasons, but the other is simply because it is perhaps the most comfortable thing in my closet.  From a fashion standpoint I have always been a big tee shirt girl.  I layer them under everything from my designer best, to my “low” go-tos.  They breathe new life into my spring dresses and anchor both my Boho Chic and Rocker-inspired sensibilities.  I have a thing for stripes and have graduated from my Ella Moss obsession to the best from Splendid and Norgaard Sroget... I seek out graphic tees, especially those from Morphine Generation and Simdog.  Yet, just when I think that that there couldn’t possibly be another tee shirt line, I am always pleasantly surprised. 

Launching this Spring (already on Saks.com for pre-order) is Alexander Wang’s new diffusion line “T by Alexander Wang”.  Consisting of 12 styles of high-fashion basics, the collection is sensual and “flashdance-esque”.  I love the new line not only because I think it could be the most well conceived “It Girl” tee collection of the season, but because it reminds me of the old favs I will never part with… Alexander Wang even said, “It’s like sleeping in a T-shirt and then wearing it the next day. It’s not this crisp little T out of the dryer. It’s draped and kind of wilted.”  The styles I love are versatile and chic.  The off the shoulder, tunic style would look perfect with skinny jeans and your favorite strappy sandals and the low scoop neck would be a sensual addition to this season’s must-have shorts.  They are also great layering pieces, so drape them, belt them and make them the cornerstone of an effortless sense of style.  At about $25-$70, buy all 12 silhouettes in the collection…that is how fab it is!!!

                     

I already mentioned Haute Hippie’s tee line Nude last week, so I won’t go into detail, but as a reminder, it is equally worthy of “favorite old tee” status.  Perhaps the best individual tee of the season is from hot newcomer, Rachel Comey.  I think her detached sleeve versions are hip and sexy.  If you have great shoulders, they are a necessity and will compliment just anything in your wardrobe.  Finally, Clu is back en force.  When this line first hit the scene, I have to admit I was obsessed, but after a couple of seasons of uninspired collections, they have returned to what they do better than anyone…draping, wrapping, ruching, folding… The new styles are simple, relaxed and so comfortable that you will never want to take them off. There is an old familiarity sweeping fashion this Spring.  Designers are creating well-priced collections that remind us of “easier” times.  These clothes are chic and modern and worthy of any hipster, though they also represent our innate desire to cocoon, to lounge around in our old favorites… Tee shirt dressing is certainly nothing new, but these collections are truly inspired and scene worthy!

Wonderland Fashion Flea Market

I have worked for the most innovative marketers such as Calvin Klein, the relentless brand builders such as Dolce & Gabbana and the true cowboys and "think outside of the box branders" such as Valentino.  I have helmed businesses through the retail good times and the bad, teaching me to maneuver and to be well yes, scrappy. I am acutely aware of the opportunities that surround me and I go after as many as I possibly can. I am in tune with the current business climate and therefore am always thinking about how we (the fashion industry) can evolve and adjust to these tougher times…

Well, a couple of months ago I had an idea and shared this idea with another scrappy entrepreneur, Michael Angelo, owner of Wonderland Beauty Parlor.  The idea grew organically into a retail concept designed to help emerging brands find a voice and secure a distribution outlet that can perhaps help them weather the impending storm.  It also developed out of a desire to engage the consumer in a way that was entertaining and perhaps alluring.  What do I mean by that?  Well I don’t know about you, but part of the reason I love to shop vintage is because I never know what I am going to find.  I don’t have that retail fatigue derived from seeing the same brands in every single store, over and over and over… So I thought, what if I could shop at a store or better yet a semi-underground event, whereby I might find some of the ubiquitous brands I love, but that I would never really be sure about what I might discover.  So out of this desire to encourage creativity and surprise the consumer, Wonderland Fashion Flea Market was born.  Here is my invitation to you…

Nouveau White Collar

Today I was in a taxi on the way to the John Varvatos store to pick up some clothes for one of my clients and as per usual found style inspiration in the most unlikely place…my taxi cab driver.  He was impeccably dressed and I mean impeccably!!!  He was wearing a beautiful safari-type jacket in a rich winter khaki, which he paired with a tonal zip front, mock-neck cardigan and perfect tweed pants.  I could only see him through the window so I have no idea what his shirt or shoes looked like, but after chatting with him, I can only imagine they were also carefully selected and sophisticated.  I complimented him on his dashing appearance which led to him sharing a bit of his style philosophy and yes, some of his private fashion fetishes.

He told me that he believes that regardless of what one does, one should always take pride in one’s appearance and that those who do are treated differently, better.  I agree!  He then shared that he has been having his suits custom tailored in Bangkok for many years and that he owns at least 100 and close to that many pairs of dress shoes…pretty amazing!!! Sadly my ride ended at that moment, but his charm and persona stayed with me all day and got me thinking about how men  should be dressing in these more difficult times. I have already written about the return of power dressing (my very first blog ever) and have featured custom shirt resources and bespoke ties, but I just feel compelled to reinforce my view that now more than ever men to need to take more pride in their appearance and always dress the part. If you want to be successful and be taken seriously, then look successful and be serious...about your style that it!

European men are historically known for being extraordinarily well-dressed, but I just recently learned that white, collared shirts or more accurately detachable collar shirts, a pervasive symbol of success and power were born in the good ole US of A in 1827.  By the turn of the century, anybody who was anybody proudly donned these detachable white collars (the white collar class was born), which were most popularly paired with bold patterns and colors.  In recent years, they have come in an out of favor, but have always remained a brash Wall Street signature. So, you are probably wondering with our financial system in turmoil, why I would want to resurrect this “big-swinging-dick” badge.  Well, here is how I see it… If my fashion-adoring taxi cab driver can feel optimistic and believe that if he puts his best self forward that it will attract success, then shouldn’t we all. 

So here is a simple tip to help you look and feel more success-ready, visit one of my new favorite stores, La Camiceria Italiana, at 509 Madison Avenue.  Founded in Rome in the 1980s and recently transported to NYC, this phenomenal shirt store carries over 400 variations of fabrics, silhouettes and collar styles…artisan quality, made-in-Italy, yet perhaps a reminder of American nattiness of yore. Kitschy Crafts

One of my clients lives/works in one of the most amazing lofts I ever been in…not because of its grandeur, but because it is filled with the most fabulous treasures from some of the world’s most renowned artists…imagine sitting amongst original Andy Warhols which have never graced the inside of a museum or gallery.  The living space is a visual panorama, a true feast for the eyes!

The other day, I was having my coffee and my eye was drawn to this amazing sculptural masterpiece.  It was on a chain, hanging from another exquisite form, so I asked if it was a necklace.  To my delight, not only was the answer yes, but my client brought our several other pieces that he had been given as well.  It turns out that the designer is famed British sculptural artist, Andrew Logan. If you are not familiar with him, he is one of the most prolific British artists.  He is known for challenging convention, mixing media and depending on the inventive use of whatever is at hand. With flair and fantasy he transforms real objects into different versions and draws inspiration from nature and the universe.  Oh and by the way, he is the only living artist with his very own museum.

I always emphasize that people need to show their personalities through dress and believe that people should invest in pieces that make them standout or add a signature flare to their style. Andrew Logan’s jeweled creations are the perfect WOW conversation starter that I promise will get you noticed.  Each piece is a mélange of faceted, candy-colored, cut jewels, reflective panels and stones.  One is more fabulous than the next!!!  Now, they are quite kitschy and have an eccentric air, but they also have a strange versatility.  The bracelets, cocktail rings and broaches would be perfect on any Upper East Side socialite and the earrings, hairwear and cigarette holders are the perfect accessories for the hipster crowd. 

My favorite pieces are the cuffs… They have an erratic, irregular, textural feel and you can see the influence from nature. The rings are also to die and have an amazing grandeur to them.  The colors are beyond vibrant and pop like perfect, little flowers.  You can only buy them online on the Andrew Logan site and the prices start at about $400.  Now, if you aren’t a big art appreciator, let me tell you, this is a steal!!! These gems rival any jewels you will find at your usual go-to stores. Now of course, the piece I covet most is my client’s over-the-top, extravagant necklace, but it an original from Andrew Logan’s earlier work and I have a hunch that he will never part with it. 

                 

One of my goals is to always expose you to the new and not readily available and Andrew Logan’s jewelry does just that.  So always think outside of the box when you shop and don’t go to the same-old-same-old…open your mind to hyper-creative accessories to build personality in your wardrobe and nurture your inner fashionista !!!!

A Shopaholic’s Journal –Shoes...The Only Safe Investment

Yes, I admit… The down payment for my apartment is tied up in my closet!!!  I probably have over 60 pairs of shoes and 10 pairs of boots...at about $500 average price, you do the math.  I don’t know about you, but I have always felt that a great pair of shoes is quite a nice investment.  I mean come on, I didn’t lose a penny in the stock market, the value of my home will never depreciate and I have a thriving designer consignment business, the perfect way to recoup some of the initial cash outlay.  It makes perfect sense to me, but of course I have admitted to a shopping addiction, so I can rationalize with the best of them!!!!  So yes, today I am going to expose my shoe fetish by sharing my absolute spring must-haves.  Remember, I couldn’t care less about trends and rules.  I simply buy what I love, as should you, so lets get started…

I am leopard obsessed…it is the new black! Every real fashionista should have at least one versatile pair in her stockpile.  My absolute favorites are from Louboutin.  They are printed patent leather so will work in the warm or the cold.  I love a little toe cleavage, so prefer the peep-toe slings, but the signature round toe pump is also fab.  Leopard works with just about anything in your closet and will never go out of style, so have some fun with them.  

Always on my list are metallics.  Yes, a big trend this Spring so the choices will be numerous, but again to me they are a go-to neutral for any season.  If you are still in the “building-your-wardrobe” mode, great silver or gold shoes are a must.  Again think versatility and they will carry you from season to season.  Some standouts in stores now are of course from Louboutin (yes, I am a major fan).  I am coveting the crisscross, ruched, peep toe, platforms in silver, but the gold round toe pumps are an amazing classic option.  Pair them now with neutral fishnets and you will have a sexy fall look.  For another smart wardrobe-building option, gravitate towards the plethora of nude shades available now.  I absolutely love the look of a bare foot and this season’s au naturel styles do not disappoint.  I am dying for the pale rose satin Stella McCartney pointed toe, platform pumps…my rocker chic answer to fall.  I also don’t know if I will survive without the Miu Miu nude, patent slingbacks with a bamboo heel…to die for!!!

                               

I still have a burning desire for gladiator-inspired or harder-edged styles, again perhaps the downtown girl in me.  At the top of my list are the Givenchy cut-out booties, the YSL cut-out suede platforms and the Alexander McQueen flash boots…that hint of neon pink is just beyond.  On the softer side, I am loving the pink Louboutin cage platform sandals and the Guiseppe Zanotti two-tone patent creations are unbelievable.

                              

I love a perfect pair of wedges for the warmer months.  You can’t survive the Soho House slatted floor roof (the ultimate heel eater) or the Hamptons parties without some flat-bottomed friends.  The pairs I covet most happen to come in one of my must-have shoe shades, cherry red.  The YSL Lili Wedge is the chicest of the cork-heeled wonders, but Louboutin still has a corner on creating the sexiest, most feminine versions.  The cherise colored, patent, ankle-wrap espadrille is an absolute must-have, but the pretty-in-pink, bow, cork wedge from Dior gives Louboutin a run for his money.

                 

These are my absolute favs from the new crop in stores now, but there are a few stunners coming soon that I just need to talk about.  Can you say ruffles galore?  The ruffled, python Valentinos are truly decadent.  Killer metallics…Alexander McQueen’s Silver Python sling-backs are pure fantasy, and the Givenchy gladiators should be on every It Girl’s list.  Subtle nudes…how much do I love the Chloe Suzie sandals? Spring booties…the Fendi jute and red suede versions are hardcore perfection. Tribal masterpieces…the Louis Vuitton’s are an artistic feat (no pun intentded).

 
I know all of these are crazy expensive, but shoes are the one style necessity that I truly feel you get what you pay for.  Knockoffs look cheap!  One exception…you don’t need to spend a month’s mortgage on ballet flats or flat sandals. I will be sure to give you many “low” options as we get deeper into Spring and yes, debt.  In the meantime, let loose and get ready for one truly inspired season of shoes!!!!

My Perfect Day

I am a big fan of laying low on a chilly Sunday in the dead of winter… I admit, I enjoy a little hibernation from time to time.  Its not laziness, just a great way to recharge the battery for the busy week ahead.  This Sunday was particularly rejuvenating as I hit the trifecta…NFL Playoffs, Golden Globes and my favorite comfort food.  I am that rare female; part fashion-adoring, girly-girl, part insane football fan.  I don’t need a man to force me to watch this brutal sport, in fact I always say bring it on!  I grew up in a football fanatic household and was a covert by the ripe old age of about twelve.  My ex was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and his love of his team was contagious.  Although, we are not together anymore, I just can’t get them out from under my skin.  Maybe it was witnessing the team’s greatness in person in 20-degree weather one December day, or maybe it was experiencing the Terrible Towel visual barrage in one of the historical stadiums in the NFL.  Either way, they are in my blood and I love it!!

OK, OK, I know you don’t want to read a story about football, so I am going to use this opportunity instead to discuss my other favorite sport, the female version of the playoffs, the Golden Globes Red Carpet…perhaps a preview to the Oscars, always a signal of fashion trends to watch for.  It’s so much fun to pick and pan, so of course this event is a blogger’s dream!

The big trends on the Red Carpet for the ladies were metallics, ruching, draping/sculpture, va-va-voom shapes and strapless necklines.  The Big Screen sirens chose dramatic yet classic black, navy and shades of white, while the TV starlets experimented with jewel tones and pale colors.  The result was one of the strongest Red Carpets in years.  I could barely choose my top picks. 

That being said, my favorite women, in no particular order, were Olivia Wilde in that to-die lavendar Reem Acra gown, so Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Eva Longoria in a perfect red Reem Acra mermaid column. I adored the scalloped bodice and you know how I love those red dresses. Kyra Sedgwick also looked phenomenal in Red Oscar De La Renta. Christina Appelgate was the ultimate golden girl in Roberto Cavalli and her Lorraine Schwartz floral necklace was my favorite of the night. Beyonce’s Lorraine Schwartz was also spectacular.  Kate Winslet looked so beautiful in her understated YSL black gown; a true movie star. Finally Dior’s ivory gowns looked chic on Sandra Bullock and Eva Mendez and the pale grey on Drew was etherial and dreamlike (hated her hair though).  I am never a fan, but I sort of loved Renee Zellweger’s Carolina Herrera, girly-goth look (vampire chic, but really bad hair).  The critics may hate it, but I commend her for trying something out of her comfort zone.

The big winners of the night were Anne Hathaway in that show stopping navy, embellished Armani Prive column and Elizabeth Banks in a blush J. Mendel; beyond feminine, beautifully detailed and the sweetheart neckline was young, yet provocative.   And thank god for my go-to rule breaker, Cameron Diaz in Chanel Haute Couture for shaking things up; her bright watermelon number rocked my world.  Finally, of the ladies glowing in ivory, Kate Beckinsdale's J. Medel, sculptured flower of a gown was the clear winner. 

                     

Male trends are harder to pin down, as the classic penguin suit is the norm, but a few call outs were straight ties, narrow lapels and clean simple lines.  Though nothing drastically new, the look was youthful and modern and in many ways fresh.  The best of this bunch were Kevin Connelly, in Calvin Klein, Leonardo DiCaprio, and David Duchovny.  Aaron Eckhart and John Hamm were classic perfection in their quintessential Hollywood bowties. The Jonas Brothers win the award for alternative black tie, with red shirts, velvet jackets and compact small bowties (the perfect expression of youth) and I sort of loved the newly slimmed down Seth Rogan in a modern shawl and white tie.  Finally, what can I say about Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise (the only star to don a DB) and Patrick Dempsey. They can do no wrong and represent the best of classic Hollywood.   

Overall it was a great day for me, (the Steelers killed the Chargers) and an even better day for fashion.  I hope you had a chance to revel in the perfection that Hollywood served up and that as always you were truly inspired!!!!

Couture Obsessions

I know, I have promised in these tougher times to keep the price point at a digestable level, but sometimes I just feel compelled to share the somewhat unattainable… A few weeks ago I fell in love the most amazing website, CoutureLab.  Really, it puts its close competitors to shame…no names mentioned, you know who they are.  It specializes in one-of-a-kind, limited edition and bespoke merchandise and features lesser-known design-phenoms.  It celebrates art and true over-the-top, yet modern creativity!

The highlights for me are many, but I will start with a collection that if I had the wherewithal, I would buy away… Walid For CoutureLab, one of the most unique accessory lines I have seen of late.   Walid Al Damirji started his collection in 2005, developing a cult following for his antique passementerie, luxury textile and embellished pieces.  One piece is more spectacular than the next, though my favorite is a to die beaded antique collar.  The embellished fur collars are also beyond fabulous and the honey-colored mink vest with Victorian lace and 1920’s pearl beading is so freakin amazing, that I am speechless.  Even if you can’t afford the pieces, they are simply worth salivating over. 

                              

The next line that flipped my "vintage-loving" skirt is E2, from Parisian design team, Michele Meunier and Olivier Chatenet. They create the most covetable dresses and coats by recycling vintage fabrics and altering original couture designs.  My favorites are a 1930’s silk kimono dress, an Hermes scarf print dress and the most beautiful reconditioned Dior dress.  For all of you girls who just need to have your designer labels, E2 will not only give you a big fix, but you will own a true one-of-a-kind… How can you pass this opportunity up?

                    

If you haven’t heard of Bea Valdes, you don’t know what you are missing. Bea Valdes grew up in Manila, Philippines, and has created one of the most wonderful and awe-inspiring accessory lines.  The bags are mind-blowing! Her use of embellishment is true artisan perfection.  If you ever had any doubt that fashion is art, then look no further than this uber-talented designer.  Her jewelry collection shares a kinship to the East and is show-stopping on every level.  They are true conversation pieces, so if you like to be noticed, Bea Valdes in the artist for you.

                    

There are so many lines to talk about on this perfectly curated site, but I am only going to feature one more, minaPoe from Parisian designer, Mina d'Ornano. By now you are tired of hearing about how I love my Bohemian, but minaPoe’s capes and ponchos are Boho knitwear perfection. I absolutely adore her knotted ribbon cape…an amazing combination of drape and movement and her crocheted, silver flower poncho is seductive and feminine.  The grand finale is a silk satin cape with delicately crocheted panels…a must-have replacement to your go-to Spring evening fur!

                    

I hope this blog entry has inspired you to always search for the true artisans in fashion.  So often, we hear that there isn’t anything truly unique in design anymore…everyone knocks everyone off… All of the brands featured on this site, prove this theory wrong…each has a rare voice and a passion for creating wearable art, so if you want to splurge, forgo that $2,000 It Bag and invest in these one-of-a-kind dazzlers.  They are the true “Its” for this Spring and really any season to come!!!!

Stroll Into Spring

I am a boots fanatic.  If I could wear boots 365 days a year, I most certainly would…comfortable, practical for my on-the-go lifestyle, and beyond stylish.  I also happen to love a man in boots…rugged, strong and downright sexy. I have to admit I have always had a thing for a guy in motorcycle boots…the rocker girl in me, or military-inspired boots…no uniform-centric fantasy, I just love the look of them. So this will probably come as a surprise, but the boot style that I am most obsessed with now and that I think will transition your Fall to Spring wardrobe with an air of effortlessness is the quintessentially versatile and always classic Desert Boot.  

The ones that I recommend most often to my clients are the J. Crew MacAlister Boots for the amazing price of $135.  They are the perfect Desert Boots… They come in three perfect colors; dark khaki, a cross between cognac and sand, dark chestnut, a rich coffee-like brown and my favorite stone, a truly rich neutral.  They have the perfect shape, the perfect top stitch detail and the perfect, not too heavy rubber sole.  You can wear them now with just about anything and for any occasion…pair the lighter colors with jeans or your favorite casual pant, and the richer colors with grey flannel, even a suit. I think they are a fresh replacement to some of the harder edged boots of the season and an easy modern-feeling update to sneakers or some of the Top-Sider-inspired styles from last Spring.

Another great option is from one of my favorite boot manufacturers, Fiorentini + Baker, available at Barneys. The Ago Boots are a chukka style (ankle length) and have squarish toes and leather soles.  They feel a bit more rough and tumble than the MacCalister boots and are a great option for the guy who can’t easily part with his soldier-like stompers!  These retail for $360 and are available in a flawless shade of stone.  I would save these for weekend and after work as they aren’t refined enough for an elegant flannel… Of course, if you are a rule-breaker (which I always embrace) go for it.

For the true modernista, the Pierre Hardy Suede Booties at Barneys are the choice.  They are the ultimate hybrid; part sneakers, part Desert Boots and are definitely suited to the ultra hip set.  They have a Desert Boot shape, ankle strap closure and a thick rubber sole.  The fashion guy can wear them with just about anything, but I see them with a skinny trouser or jean…they have just the right weighty appearance to be the perfect counterbalance to a narrow, clean-lined silhouette.  Also at $360, they won’t completely break your bank.

Now if I just can’t convince you that Desert Boots are way cool, then I have some options for you that sort of do the trick.  Leave it to vintage-inspired, shoe-master John Varvatos to design the right Fall-to- Spring, downtown guy boots.  I love his Renwick Boots available at Bergdorf Goodman; slightly distressed/worn-feeling, oiled suede, in a sumptuous cognac shade.  They are certainly more Chelsea boot, then desert, but the softer color qualifies them to be included in this transitional tale and their apparent versatility requires no explanation. They are the priciest option at $450, but they also can take you through at least nine months of the year, so are smart investment pieces!

So to all of my male readers, whether you are a fashion plate or just a style/luxury conscious guy, Desert Boots are absolutely the thinking man’s choice to subtly carry you from your winter doldrums to the promise of an early Spring.  Remember in tough times, buy versatile pieces that have great longevity and stand the test of style time!!!

70's Chic @ Chelsea Girl Vintage -Written for BlackBook Magazine

                   

I was born in 1966, so my first fashion impressions were influenced by the end of the era of bohemian, free-love style and the beginning of the decade of disco glam. I remember loving my kid-friendly hot pants, mod dresses, and white go-go boots, even as a young girl always gravitating towards a more hippie-chic sensibility. I've carried these early references with me throughout my life, and I'll always will be drawn to throwback fashion. Only one store in New York City truly captures the nuances of early 70s style: Chelsea Girl Vintage.

Hippie Chic

Nothing makes me happier then when I find a brand that encompasses my personal sense of style in every way… You know I am a self proclaimed Boho Chic girl and pretty much gravitate to anything that feels vintage 1960’s/1970’s.  Of course, I always want to look modern so usually like most style savvy women, I try to meld my coveted pieces with sometimes uptown and sometimes slightly irreverent options. 

I also am water/beach obsessed and always desire clothes that have that seaside ease to them.  I want to look put togther, yet always comfortable and never like I try too hard.  In comes a brand that I recently discovered and feel a strange kinship to, Haute Hippie…  I mean, come on, the name alone is so me. 

I first happened upon this hot newbie brand while indulging in an online shopaholic moment.  I believe I was on the Ron Herman site and found one of their signature sequin dresses.  Then recently I had the pleasure to meet the amazingly down to earth and beyond stylish founder Trish Wescoat and I felt compelled to formally introduce you to her life passion.

The line can be best described on their website, so I will share a small excerpt… “Haute Hippie embraces the expertise of haute couture design and craftsmanship, whilst adopting the freedom of the bohemian spirit.  The spirit of the wayward, the eccentric, the importance of the individual - blending it with the ethos and style of the sophisticate, the well traveled, the luxurious and the elegant.” 

The new Spring line hitting the stores soon is perfect.  The sequin dresses are fab and yes, meant for day or evening.  I adore sequins and frequently wear them with total disregard for the occasion… The Haute Hippie pieces look amazing over a wife beater, with a flat sandal or all dolled up.  The neutral, metallic Spring color palette has a wear now feel, so the dresses are immediate must-haves and will look perfect with tights and your go-to Fall booties.

The knitwear is another big standout, especially the most amazing sequined, boyfriend sweater.  It sort of reminds me of Flash Dance meets the Donna Karan of the 1990’s…luxury, comfort, and pure sex appeal!!!  The modern 60’s-inspired ponchos are the picture of versatility.  Again, wear them now with your favorite faux leather leggings, boots and a chic fedora or take them on your winter escape and make them your favorite cover-up.  They have a soft, feminine edge, not a crunchy/granola vibe.  Finally, Haute Hippie offers the perfect undergarments or layering pieces from their Nude Hippie Collection.  The brand provides one-stop shopping so you don’t have to go on that dreaded search for something that works.  The rompers, boy shorts and camisoles are sensual little numbers.  Trust me your man will be oh so happy to see you out of your sequin dress with some of these pieces on!!!!

                        

The Resort collection in stores now is limited, but you can find the signature embellished racer back dresses and one spectacular maribou vest on Nordstrom.com.  The Fall sale is great too!

So let your love of throwback fashion inspire you to become a modern hippie, continue to embrace embellishment for evening, but especially for day and support a newcomer with a desire to celebrate women in their most natural and stylish state!!!!

Geminola Vintage: Something Old, Something New -Written For BlackBook Magazine

We're all familiar with the popular wedding poem, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.” A good friend of mine recently became engaged, so as the ritual planning of the impending nuptials commences, I've been thinking a lot about this saying and how powerfully it relates to vintage fashion. “Something Old” refers to our connectivity to and appreciation for the past; “Something New” to optimism and hope; "Something Borrowed" to the sharing of good fortune and another nod to the past; and “Something Blue” is a reference to olden times when women actually wore blue -- as in blue wedding dresses.

The Road Less Traveled

Do you ever happen upon a street in Manhattan that you know is there but you sort of ignore, as you are always off to greener pastures?  I love when this happens!!!  It is almost like venturing over one of those many bridges to Brooklyn to discover hidden treasures, but with less perceived hardship than actually making the trek.  Today I actually decided to kill some time on one of those very streets, the lightly trafficked part of Lafayette between Prince and Spring.  It is sort of in no man’s land…in a little nook where Soho ends and Nolita begins. There has always been some action on Lafayette between Prince and Houston, but few have yet to truly experience the shopping bliss on this road less traveled.

My first destination is a store I have been dying to feature, LP&P by Catherine Fung.  I happened upon it last summer as I was walking home and immediately fell in love.  It was sort of that in between time when Spring melds into Fall merchandise, so I made a note to come back when the leaves were actually turning.  The knitwear is absolutely phenomenal.  Think back to my The Art Of Construction story where I featured truly inspired sweater designers.  Each piece is more artistic than the next and all are 100% handknit.  Even the back wall is covered with phenomenal handknit panels.  I really have never seen anything like them.  I wish I could have one for my apartment, part wall art, part bedding perhaps…  The other standout is the handmade jewelry.  Each piece is beautifully embellished on feminine ribbons of fabric.  The bracelets are spectacular!!!!  Everything in the store is marked down and worth the visit. 

                          

Across the street is another must-check-out, In God We Trust.  This store caters to men and women and specializes in a more irreverent, downtown, hipster style. Great little high-necked, ruffled placket dresses and perfect jackets for the girls, and interesting shirts and stylish outerwear for the guys are standouts.  The store’s namesake label is the best purchase in the store, though they do carry a small selection of lesser-known brands as well.  If you are in the market for the perfect winter hat, theirs are as chic as one of my favs Eugenia Kim, but half the price.  A fur cap for $80 can’t be beat.  For a tiny space, they manage to maintain an uncluttered, well-edited selection that any trendsetter can embrace! 

A couple doors up the street is another semi-underground discovery, Label.  Great prices, unique pieces, again more Brooklyn cool chick, less mainstream fashionista, but also quite wearable for a style conscious, non-fashion victim girl.  The knit pieces were my favorites, but I am also now coveting the perfect, asymmetrical closure, tweed vest.  All of the clothes have a relaxed, slightly weekend-wear feel, but if you have a great sense of style, experiment!  I can think of many ways to make the fashion in this store oh so versatile. By the way, their website is really out of date so hit the store instead...

The last of the clothing stores on the little gem of a strip, is nypull.  It has been there the longest and has the most interesting mix of brands.  They claim to showcase 150 unknown labels in their small space, so if you are willing to dig, there are many really cool finds.  They have clothes for men and women, but good luck, telling everything apart.  The merchandising is haphazard and has that vintage store hodgepodge feel, but if you are a true seeker of style and uniqueness, then have some fun and troll through the endless racks of newbie designers.  Guys, if you are still looking for that perfect hat, they have some of the best!!!!

So next time you are in Soho or Nolita, make sure to put this little gem of a block on your list.  I promise you will feel like you ventured out of your Manhattan comfort zone to a little piece of uncharted fashion heaven.  Even if you are more of an uptown girl, LP&P by Catherine Fung is worth the trip alone...just wait until you see her Spring dresses!!!!

Style Mavens –Preppy Done Right

 So today officially launches my new bi-monthly column, Style Mavens.  I will be the first to admit that it isn’t a unique idea to feature fabulous people in fabulous clothes, but Style Mavens will veer slightly from The Sartorialist format and feature only people I know.  You see, I want to put my vast Facebook network to use.  One of my favorite social networking features is the photo sharing functionality.  Not only do I enjoy seeing my friends in action, but I am consistently inspired by their style choices… Now don’t panic, I will always ask for your approval before poaching a photo and Style Mavens will always be about the best in class, so nothing but glowing critique!

Last week, I pretty much bashed preppy style in my Prepped Out entry.  Now of course, my commentary is usually generalized and my point-of-view can always be broadened, so I am open to differing ideas.  You see, the best part about style is it evolves and changes; it is fluid… So, when I am exposed to fashion that expands my sense of style, I feel compelled to celebrate it and at times even contradict myself!  This is why I chose to launch Style Mavens with a photo of my friend Brendan, who actually embodies Preppy Done Right.

I love the way he looks in this photo.  He celebrated New Year’s in the Bahamas, lucky guy, and is the portrait of island-party-chic.  First of all, I adore his Hugo Boss jacket.  The perfect modern plaid, great trim detail, sexy fit.  I love when a man has the confidence to ignore formal dressing rules and deviates from the norm.  Use this as an example to break out of your typical Black Tie rut.  You can wear it now for any dressier occasion with black pants, white shirt, black bowtie, basically the way Brendan styled it and then break it our again in the warmer weather with white pants, khakis (a al Brendan) or a pair of dark rinse jeans.  Of course, think about the type of Black Tie or cocktail occasion you are attending before you choose your pairings.  If you need advice, always feel free to ask me…

Here the bowtie is pefect!  He chose a narrow, tightly formed version, which proportionally works beautifully with the bold plaid.  He also went simple with the shirt choice.  When going pattern-strong, a clean, unfussy shirt is always the flawless alternative.

Plaid is also so versatile… Brendan chose to dress it up, but this jacket would also look great with some of the new more distressed denim washes, the perfect J. Crew Oxford shirt and a cool pair of sneaks.  You don’t have to stick with a white shirt; a classic Oxford blue or even a very subtle blue stripe would work as well.  If trying the pattern mix, only attempt if you really have fashion confidence.  If you don’t, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with subtlety!

Look for lots of plaid jacket options for Spring 2009.  Some of my favorites are from Z Zegna, think modern, slim fit, slightly quieter than Brendan's and prices that are accessible.  I also love the plaids that Thom Browne designed for the Black Fleece Collection at Brooks Brothers. Of course, you pay for Thom's innovative talent, but for the true fashionophiles, his are the go-tos.

A Shopaholic’s Journal –Who Needs A Catwalk

Only true shopaholics know the pleasure of finding that unique brand that still hasn’t received critical acclaim…  You literally have to shop all of the time to truly discover these little fashion gems and you have to have an open mind and creative eye.  Anyone can wear DVF, BCBG, and yes even one of my favs Jill Stuart, but only a select few have the ability to cut through the clutter to find a little bit of fashion salvation in a sea of ubiquity…  Luckily for you, I am one of those unique shopaholics, so I want to share some of the brands that you should pay close attention to this Spring.

On the top of my list for the last couple of seasons has been an amazing little French brand called Heimstone.  I had the pleasure to meet/interview the two young designers on a dreary day last winter and have to tell you that not only were they beyond fab, but I adore their clothes.  Part rock-n-roll, part girly girl, the collection has a distinct point of view.  Imagine details from the rocker Spring ’09 Balmain jackets subtly imposed on a flowing little dress. They also love the idea of a built-in corset as a signature element, which I think is genius. This season they move the collection forward by experimenting with patchwork, piecing and cutouts.  The dresses are the definite standouts, but some of their little jackets are also on my covet list.  You can still find a few pieces on LaGarconne on sale if you hurry!

                    

Another line that will absolutely be on my must have list is Aussie brand Life With Bird. So downtown girl casual…think almost 80’s punk meets Kirsten Dunst waif.  Now if you are cringing at the description, don’t freak, the collection is easy and wearable and fun and girly…perfect vacation attire.  You can find it on LaGarconne and Satine right now. 

          

I LOVE Lover!  I first happened upon it at Barneys a couple of years ago and have since followed the cool chick brand… I am always drawn to their more structured pieces that have a school girl meets irreverent hipster vibe.  The collection has a harder edged ease…basically less flowing and draped, more constructed.  Tough to find, but Barneys always has some key styles as does Steven Alan in Tribeca. 

Perhaps the most well known of the brands is Mayle.  I want everything from the Resort collection…it is perfect! From the best dresses, to go-to blouses, this collection is vintage-inspired, smartly detailed and always feminine.  I also think it offers some of the best jumpsuits/rompers and harem pants of the season, so if you want to try these trends, Mayle is a great way to go.  Net-A-Porter still has some seasonless pieces on sale and the Mayle website or the store in Nolita has the best of the Resort line.  This collection is great for work as well as play, so it can be a great wardrobe builder!!! 

                  

By the way, buy some of your spring clothes from Resort collections, as I often find some of the most creative pieces for these small concise capsules. 

Next on my covet list is Mischen for the perfect party dress… Sometimes the overall collection point-of-view is a bit all over the place, but for that special item, it will always be a go-to for me.  Right now I desire a nude beautifully draped, wrapped little number with a WOW piece of pink lace subtly grazing the shoulder.  I am also loving some of the embellished, tiered dresses.  Again LaGarconne is the best bet for sale, but if you prefer the in store experience, Intermix in NYC should have the new collection soon. 

I also want to mention some brands that didn’t necessarily make my must-have list as a full collection, but will be sure to have some amazing pieces in stores soon.  Look for Karen Zambos Vintage Couture and Twinkle by Wenlan for great resort dresses and Tsumori Chisato and Future Classics for special, more high-design fashion.

          

Remember don’t rely on the obvious this Spring…think outside of the box and explore lesser known brands.  Nothing wrong with ubiquity once in a while, but those with true style will always strive to be a bit underground, a bit creative and always truly inspired!!!

Across The Pond

If I had to pick one city that reflected my fashion sensibility like no other, it would be London!  If you are reading my blog consistently you would have noticed the of the 4 women I named as my style inspirations in 2008, 2 are Brits…  Part street style, part private club, It Girl chic, nothing gets my fashion juices flowing more than good dose of London flare…

I fell in love with Christopher Kane as soon as he showed his first collection.  His dresses are artistic and imaginative and like some of the French this season truly represents a futuristic view of fashion… He uses circular cutting as his signature for Spring '09 and the effect at times is quite genius.  There is a sense of movement that envelops the body and creates this strangely harder edged femininity.  Again the party set should rejoice as Christopher Kane provides them with so many options to play in…

             

Luella, Luella, Luella…the perfect mix of ladies-who-lunch meets downtown vintage girl chic!!!  If Sex And The City was still on TV, I can imagine Carrie Bradshaw proudly displaying some of the choice pieces in this collection.  Over the top color, a little bit of saccarin sweet and Chanel-inspired references, delight the senses and provide oh so many way to stand out in a crowd!

              

I have always been obsessed with Ossie Clark and so want to love the revival… Although, the collection as a whole didn’t really resonate for me, I adore the evening dresses, as they feel truly connected to the past.  They represent a more modern view of the bohemian style of the 60’s and although not quite red carpet ready, I think they could be the maxi dress must haves of the season.  I plan to keep an eye on this collection once it hits retail, as so often the best pieces don’t even make the catwalk.

             

My favorite cocktail dress collection comes from cult, avant garde, dress designer Roksanda Illincic.  Her use of embellishment is true art as she handcrafts flowers and ribbon that serve to wrap and accent her flowing, draped frocks.  She also uses tulle to encase her creations, almost rendering a vision of a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.  I love the romantic effect!!!

             

Sadly the fashion lineup for the London shows is quite limited as most of the BIG talent migrates to Milan and Paris, but nonetheless, I always enjoy discovering newish design innovators and exploring the often off-trend set that likes to call my second favorite city in the world home…

So, I have now shared my Spring 2009 RTW loves, thoughts, inspirations and I have to tell you, for the first time in a long time, New York wins.  I could barely edit my choices and cannot wait to delve into each and every one of the highlighted collections.  Look for tomorrow’s blog to uncover some of the emerging brands that I covet that don’t yet make it onto a global catwalk…I promise you will want to fill your closet with theses semi-underground finds in the months to come!!!

I Love Paris In The Springtime

What can one say about Paris that hasn’t been said hundreds of times before?  Is it the romance, the seductive language, the awe-inspiring architecture, the lifeblood of the city, the Seine that makes Paris such a special place?  Or, is it simply that it is perhaps the most chic city in the world?  Don’t get me wrong, you know I put NYC on a pedestal and am beyond excited about what is happening in American design; its just that Paris to me in so many ways is where fashion will always begin and end… And in true form, the Spring 2009 shows did not disappoint… So many pushed the design boundaries, challenged our perspective and elevated our collective fashion consciousness!

I am going to start with a show near and dear to my heart, Balmain.   I love my rock-n-roll and I gravitate towards anything feminine, so this collection gives me just the right amount of sexed up sweet… The rock-meets-military jackets are on the top of my list (of course I will need to source a great “low” option) and the embellished bandage dresses and frilly tutu dresses are musts for the party set… The new slightly rounded shoulder is perfection and perhaps the most wearable version sent down the catwalks this season.

             

Like Balmain, Balenciaga plays into my love of the edgier side of fashion.  Nicholas Ghesquiere is arguably the most innovative designer today and never fails to deliver a thought-provoking collection.  I am not sure how much of it I would wear, but I appreciate the genius behind it and his ability to set fashion trends.  Part bondage, part futuristic femme fatale, the collection explores some of the most amazing combinations of drape and structure, matte and shine, crinkled and smooth.  The standouts for me are the structured, android-esque jackets and almost racing/motocross-inspired pants.  Of course, I would love to have the lifestyle to don one of those amazing straight jacket-like, bondage dresses, but I suppose some things are just better left to the imagination!

             

The most covetable red carpet collection came from Nina Ricci… The new gown seen in many collections this season is short in the front, long in the back.  Olivier Theyskens’ are provocative, yet romantic, slightly Victorian and will be sure to wow at this season’s award shows.  The leg is clearly the new focal point and even his less formal dresses subtly expose this long-legged dream.  Leave it to the French to celebrate a woman’s beautiful gams (Can-Can anyone?)…  An honorable mention in the red carpet category is of course, Giambattista Valli…part 50’s prom-queen, part modern Marie Antoinette, the gowns are oh so sweet!

              

I have never been a big Sonia Rykiel fan, but I have to tell you I adore this Spring collection.  It was just so Parisian, so over the top and yet so accessible at the same time. The candy colored sheer, ruffled blouses and dresses are by far some of my favorites of the season…the ultimate in femininity! The collection pays less attention to trends and focuses instead on celebrating women and for that I am grateful.  I hope to see more of Sonia in stores this season and vow to find her most special pieces to feature.

             

Best for last…I am passionate about Lanvin!  My one big splurge would be a Alber Elbaz creation.  The draping technique is exquisite and the experimentation with shape in unparalleled.  Sure the dresses are never the most figure flattering, but to me they are like wearing a piece of art.  This season the petite frocks almost appear to be flowers that gently envelope one’s form.  The colors are also some of the most vibrant of the season with a heavy dose of jewel tones in what was a subdued and sometimes somber Spring palette.  Finally, I adore the mix of the almost utilitarian blouse shape with some of the most fantastic sculpted skirts of the season!

             

Now for my honorable mentions… Givenchy is glam and at times hard core, but I love the pieced, cut-away dresses.  I can see them on every party girl… I will covet some of the Chloe dresses for their sheer ease and play on uptown sophistication meets downtown laisez faire…  I am intrigued by Martine Sitbon’s Rue Du Mail collection and must have her perfect micro-paneled red dress, but overall the jury is still out on this one.  Last but not least, if you are a Chanel girl, this collection inspires.  The attention to detail and shape and the intelligent use of embellishment is some of Lagerfeld’s best work to date.  The crystal encrusted suits are perfection and should be on every lady-who-lunches list!!!

          

Paris was hard edged, trendsetting and beyond forward thinking!!!  Less the romance of the Paris of yore and more a hotbed for futuristic creativity and in some cases just pure genius… So embrace the juxtaposition and continue to love Paris for all of its historical beauty and meaning, while opening your mind to perhaps a new day in fashion!!!!

La Dolce Vita

Leave it to the Italians to come up with the most beautiful saying…it simply means the sweet life. It is what I always strive for, though I already think my life is pretty sweet…  I believe that if you truly attempt to live your life with a dolce vita-esque energy that not only will you be content and fulfilled, but you will find true joy, true love and of course, a world of fun!

No one can argue that Italians have a zest for life… Just look at some of their most affecting imports; opera, cuisine, fast cars and oh yes, fashion!!!!  So today, in continuing with my New Year’s theme, I want to share my favorite collections from Milan with the hopes that they may inspire you to  style greatness or at least to live life to the fullest… 

I have to start with Prada and Miu Miu (actually shown in Paris).  Both collections make my list pretty much every season, but this time around I found Miuccia particularly inspired and boundry-pushing.  Embracing simplicity, not minimalism, this somewhat unkempt collection was wrinkled, crinkled perfection.  I loved the overtly provocative notes such as exposed self-fabric bras and subtle figure enhancing shapes. The dresses are stellar, particularly the snakeskin version and the gold lame finale pieces are absolutely on my cocktail covet list!!!!

            

Ahhh Miu Miu…do I love this collection! To me Miu Miu is always a little “avant girly”…always directional, but also feminine and sweet.  Perhaps coquettish, perhaps waifish at times, Spring 2009 delivers.  The new skirt shape is delightful...slightly tuliped, pleated, tucked, with heavy waistbands and draped fabric.  Part architecture, part fluid movement, they are sure to be one of the season’s must haves.  I also adore the paneled dresses and think the ancient tile print dresses are the perfect modern response to a more ethnic-type print…

             

Next on my list, surprisingly, is Dolce & Gabbana.  Don’t get me wrong I think they are genius, but I tend to shy away from their brash ladies who lunch power looks.  I sometimes find their use of sexuality over the top, but not this season.  They are sort of my Marc Jacobs of Milan.  Pajama fabrics prevail, experimentation with severe structured shapes surprise, and the appliqué dresses and skirts are just WOW!!!!  They also use embellishment more intelligently than almost anyone this season.  The collection as a whole is pure drama and to me represented the ultimate in La Dolce Vita.  Jumpsuits are sure to be one of the season’s key trends, and their pajama versions are to die for…it takes a special kind of woman to pull this look off, so true fashionistas rejoice!!!

             

Burberry Prorsum, yes a British brand, always steals the show in Milan… I do love the new collection, though somber at times!  I adore the ease of it and the romantic undertones.  As per usual, I would buy all of the dresses (if you haven’t guessed I am a big dress fan) and those tile-like necklaces are “oh my god” pieces.  I also love the subtle use of dip dye and the subdued, quiet color palette.  The new, slim, fluid legging meets trouser, pant shape is also intriguing, though perhaps hard to wear. Finally, the crinkled knitwear is soothing and tactile and the perfect final touch to an exquisitely relaxed Christopher Bailey collection!

              

Sadly, no honorable mentions in the Milan set…l wasn’t impassioned this time around.  Ouch…my go-tos, Gucci and Marni didn’t even make my list.  I am sure once I dig into the season, I will find looks and pieces from these usual favs, but in the meantime I look forward to sharing my loves from Paris and London in the next couple of days…there are many!!!!

A Breath Of Fresh Air

2009 already feels like a breath of fresh air, a freezing cold breath, but nonetheless it feels fresh, new, I can’t really describe it…  Somehow, I feel inspired by the sub-zero temperatures and have decided to start the year by simply featuring my favorite collections from the coming season.  I still vow to turn you on to things you can definitely wear now over the winter months, but I think it is only appropriate to give you a taste of what is to come in ’09…

Lets start with the ladies… New York really gave me a lot of inspiration this year.  I tend to big a major Paris/London girl, but I have to say, there is so much excitement in American design right now.  Yes, one or two of the names I will mention are not Americans, but they choose NYC Fashion Week as their ultimate stage and therefore deserve to be grouped with this uber-creative set.

At the top of my list is Marc Jacobs.  I don’t even know where to begin, as I loved everything about his Spring 2009 Collection.  He is the ultimate mixologist!  The collection is part turn-of-the-century, part Asian-inspired, part Americana…perhaps it is the over-the-top vintagy feel or the to die for fabric choices or that amazing obi-style belt he uses in almost every look that makes my temperature rise. I also adore the fact that he doesn’t fall into a specific trend category…his point-of-view is beyond unique, beyond inspired!!!!

Next on my list has been omnipresent in my blog lately, Jill Stuart.  I am mad about this collection.  Flowing, layers of draped almost aqueous fabric, ballerina-esque, sweet, are just some of the descriptions that come to mind.  This collection taps right into my over-the-top desire to be a girly-girl.  The color palette is soft and soothing with warmer pinks and pale grays dominating.  Standouts for me are the dresses and the short shorts.  I even loved the leg warmer effect of the bunched stockings, though not easy to wear.

Alexander Wang’s collection was once again edgy perfection.  He did Spring leather better than any of the Americans and his short suits will be on every It-Girls list.  He took the dominatrix shoe to a new level…nothing sweet about these little numbers and his embellished tuxedo jacket rocked my world.  Lastly, he arguably showed the best selection of pants from fluid harem styles to a new straight-leg denim replacement.  He is the ultimate for the downtown thinking girl!  An honorable mention for this audience is of course Daughters from married design phenoms, Swaim and Christina Hutson.  Their boyish everything (suits, jackets) are just oh so cool!

                               

If you want to go more boho, ethnic, Anna Sui did some of the most inspired pieces.  Her embroidered, embellished dresses are fab and do I covet the boots she showed with almost everything. Believe it or not, an honorable mention should go to the ubiquitous DVF and Milly Collections as well.  The maxi dresses from both are amazing and if I could pull off those DVF headwraps, trust me I would wear one every day!

                  

A new collection to make my favs list is Preen.  To me it really underscores the feel of Spring 2009.  Preen definitely has its roots in Calvinism, with a soft neutral color palette that will challenge even the most adventurous colorists, but the anti-minimal, draped ruffle effect so predominant in the collection is a welcomed juxtaposition and one of the key new trends this season. 

Another newbie for me is Rachel Comey.  The collection is waifish, youthful and semi-pinup girl-inspired.  The print mixing is perfection and much more accessible then Marc Jacobs and I especially love the use of draped little cardigans as the ultimate layering pieces.  I am not a big cardigan girl, but I think hers are particularly charming. Her clothes are just the antidote to any hot summer day.

If I lived a socialite lifestyle, I would buy all of Douglas Hannant dresses.  His almost-frail lace versions are cocktail, black-tie perfection and deserve to be showcased at all of the spring flings.  I even think some of his dresses would be perfect for a modern bride…move over Vera!  For the downtown party-set, go Brit-transplant Mathew Williamson.  His mini sequined, ruffled, flowered little creations are right on for the set who likes a little sweet with their rock-n-roll.  Lastly on the party front, a sure to be Oscar fav will be Monique Lhuillier’s fantastic gowns.  Draped, ruched, wrapped tulle…a red carpet starlet’s dream!

                    

As per usual, I save the best for last.  Number one on my list is Rodarte!  You may not share my passion for this collection, but I for one am obsessed.  My take was less intellectual then some of the haughtier fashion press…punk rock ballerina, part futuristic siren, love them or hate them, they are arguably setting the bar for American fashion!!!!  I will never be able to afford, but will covet the almost skeletal, destroyed leather pieces, the always standout distressed knitwear and those amazing two-toned, almost tie died dresses.  I gravitate towards the softer, neutral part of the collection, but on the right woman the multi-colored gowns would be showstoppers!!!

                               

So hats off to the Americans!!! Trust me, I had a hard time picking just a few favorites.  I look forward to featuring my most coveted items and looks and hope that this little taste gives you a sneak peak into what is to come.  Throughout the rest of this week, I will feature the Europeans and of course will delve into shoes, accessories and menswear.  I will continue to share my opinions and inspirations with fervor and passion and hope you continue to enjoy my personal view of the world of style!!!
