I am 60's/70's obsessed...always have been, always will be. You can imagine my joy at the resurrection of the jumpsuit...of course, not the poly/spandex catsuits of the disco era, but a new modern twist on one-piece dressing. Now, you may not believe me, but I actually bought my first jumpsuit last summer at Jill Stuart. She was way ahead of the pack. Actually I bought my first romper a couple of years ago...remember the Norma Kamali comeback. I wear the romper all the time but never quite had the right pieces to mix with the jumpsuit...believe it or not it was a shoe issue (with over 60 pairs in my closet, I am not sure how this happened). Anyway, the moral of the story is that I was a probably a bit ahead of the curve and am now 100% prepared to don it proudly come warmer days.
If you have yet to make your first jumpsuit/romper investment and feel you could use a little guidance, I am only here to serve you. OK, so there are so many options, but here are the ones I am coveting most. First for the party girl in me, I pretty much think the MCQ Tux Jumpsuit rocks...lightweight wool with a fab cummerbund and tux jacket details, it is sleek and sexy and the perfect LBD substitute ($614). Along the same lines, but in the purest color of ivory is the beyond gorgeous Phillip Lim Ruched Silk Jumpsuit for $850. It has the most beautiful, shaped, ruched bodice, reminiscent of a sultry corset and fluid, full leg pants...honestly it is a major statement piece and would be my #1 event go-to...adore it!!!
For weekend casual there are several great choices that I desire. I love the Helmet Lang Strapless Jumpsuit, which has this sexy keyhole back detail. It comes in a drapey jersey fabric and is the first of the cropped set. Shown here "au naturale", I would belt it to give it more shape...stay skinny though. Its also easier on the wallet at $290. I am really loving the easy overall-esque version from Silence & Noise at Urban Outfitters. I love the scoop neck and would definitely layer it with a wife beater. Even more wallet friendly, it is only $78. Last but not least, and clearly not for everyone, I am beyond obsessed with the Alexander Wang Thermal Onesie. Its an easy transitional piece...lets face it, it won't really be warm for another couple of months. Belt it and wear it with a great boyfriend jacket and some tough boots...so downtown chic and oh, its on sale for $211.
Since jumpsuits are always better on those with more height, a romper may be more your style, especially if you have great legs and a fairly long torso. I am insanely attracted to those that come in bright colors or patterns as they are fun and girly and did I say fun!!! On the very top of my list is this oh-so hot, fuschia number by Adam by Adam Lippes. It is subtly wrapped and is soft and seductive in a silk crepe...super sexy, super chic ($345). I am also coveting this Flinestone-esque Alexander Wang. It is so cute...can't you see Barney Rubble in it? OK, I know you don't want to look like a short, stubby little guy, but add a belt and some sexy power shoes and you will be the coolest girl in the room. Finally, for that hot summer day, this fab little floral romper from What Comes Around Goes Around is just perfect ($230). Add a great wedge and you will be sure to turn heads.
Pay attention to the shoes you wear as the wrong choice will kill the look. With a wide leg, silky fabric, stick with a sexy sandal...a heavy shoe only accentuates the perceived weight of a full leg. With the cropped version, go badass with this season's souped up cage and gladiator styles...statement shoes are a must!!! Rompers are the easiest and are made for every style, even a cute ballerina flat.
This is one trend I intend to enjoy...in fact it could just be my dress replacement this season. Can you believe I even said that, "dressaholic" that I am?
