Idolmania has once again commenced and I have to admit that I am completely engaged. Yes, I have my favorites and I think the talent pool is pretty strong this season...my gut is one of the guys will win, but the jury is of course still out. Sadly, Idol fashion needs a little work. Once it gets to the final 12 or in this case the final 13, they do get to work with stylists, so here is my big question, are the fashion consultants simply idol this time around? Yes there were one or two standouts, but in general I was sort of like, huh?
Adam , the alt rocker, has by far the best personal style...sure it is quintessential rock-n-roll with the leather jacket, low V tee, tight jeans, but here is why I loved his look last night. He/they chose a more sophisticated leather motorcycle style. It was a fab steel blue, it was clean and fresh and looked 100% current, which also happens to be what the judges think of him as an artist. The effect was heavy metal meets high-fashion catwalk...loved it.
Megan, the Indi chic also gets it. She knows who she is and she knows how to work it. The song was a disaster, but the red dress was gorgeous in a Brooklyn kind of way. Red is also definitely her color. I also adore that her tattoos are a part of every outfit...no sleeves required. Finally, she has this doll-like look which is alluring...I mean come on, can't you tell Simon has a thing for her?
Alexis, the Southern rocker, was borderline slutty. At first I thought she looked appropriately hot, but then I realized that the biggest part of the Idol audience is teenage girls. I am not being a prude, I am just sick of seeing 9 year old girls looking like Britney wannabes. She would have been perfect with just a little tweak. I would have elongated the shorts oh so slightly and I would have added a more billowy, yet still sexy top. Actually scratch, that...she would have looked great in some of this season little rompers...still hot, still rock-n-roll, not hardcore. I am watching the results show now and she looks great...a little redemption.
Jasmine, the teen sweetheart has the opposite problem. She looks so damn cutesy. Yes, she is 16, but they need to Miley her up, just a bit. Right now she looks like a 10 year old...add some Mary Janes and little pink bow in her hair the effect would have been complete. I would give her a little bling...still keep her sweet, but she just needs a little fab.
Lil, the voice was a nightmare. The blouse made her look like a creampuff and the pants were yikes...they just didn't fit. She has that quintessential bodacious bod and she should absolutely show it off, but she needs to loosen it up just a bit and to find shapes that make her look more Rhianna (also a curvy songstress) and less suburban mom.
Allison, the Heart-meets-Kelly Clarkson powerhouse is all rocker, but she looked like a slob last night. She too needs a little cleaning up. One less bell, one less whistle and it might have worked for her. The red hair is kind of her thing, so her clothes shouldn't compete with her thing. She needs to be more Gwen Stefani and less P!nk.
Anoop, the Bollywood, college dude actually got it right, that is if he was going to a Duke University mixer or maybe it is Carolina...whatever. I don't know, maybe he just bugs me. I guess the look was cool. Hey, I can change my mind. Regardless, I think he is going home, so no further commentary required.
Danny, the male voice was almost really good, almost. You know how I hate the un-tucked shirt look. God, if had just tucked it in, it again almost would have worked. The other problem was his beyond cool Libertine-esque jacket was just too hip for the red button down shirt. If he just had an interesting graphic tee on, he would have been at the top of my list. I hope he learns as he goes, as my guess is he will be around until the very end.
Jorge, the Latin Lover just didn't rock it. That flouncy linen jacket and baggy purple tee made him look more Miami Vice, than top 40 star. I would love to see him in a Justin Timberlake-esque suit. I think he should have a super chic image to match his smooth voice. I also love his sweetness, but the droopy look just made him seem more syrupy than he should be.
Matt, the white guy with major soul was also OK, except there was one small issue...I don't remember what he looked like. Hats and scarves are sort of his thing, but after Simon criticized the look last week, he lost his edge. I like the cool boy fedora look for him and he should bring it back and soon...F Simon...I would love to revamp his style too.
Scott, the songbird needs a BIG makeover. I know he is blind, I am not being insensitive...this is about the people who are styling him, not him. His voice is unbelievable and I think his look should be equally as memorable. He needs a little hair trim and he needs to be edged up slightly. He would look great in jeans and a cool shirt. He needs to lose the jacket look. I would even love him in just a white shirt and some modern khakis...he just needs some clean, sleek factor.
Michael and Kris...sorry guys I just don't have a clue what you wore...it was that boring. No photo required. Not quite sure how you made it though to next week. Your voices are pretty boring too. Sorry again.
So that is my Idol roundup...ouch they need some work. I look forward to yet another week as it is so much fun to critique and if you missed it last night...Jorge and Jasmine are out.
