So I finally made it to Topshop yesterday and I have to say, I was so disappointed!!! It didn't feel like the London experience at all. I was expecting something you can't get everywhere...something edgy and cool, knock-offs of the best trends, collections, yet instead it was really overpriced tee shirt heaven. Is the American consumer so safe, so boring that all Topshop could muster up is a sea of knit tunics, uninspired sundresses and disco ball leggings (ok they get trend points here, but the wrong trend). Now perhaps I missed out on all of the good stuff since I decided to wait to avoid lines and crowds, but come on...the store just opened two weeks ago, so how could they be sold out already? Frenzy or not, don't they want to keep the customer engaged?
I was hoping for Balmain-esque or Alexander Wang-esque fashion at a ridiculous price, but instead what I found was a big yawn. H&M and Zara should not fear...once the hooplah dies down and it will, they are sitting pretty. The whole idea behind these stores is to provide disposable trendy fashion that people just gotta have and this is what I was longing for with Topshop. I was more excited about this opening then any in recent years but alas walked out without opening my wallet. For those who know me, you know this never happens. Trust me, I really wanted to buy something, to have a little piece of the store I have been dreaming about for a year, but I just couldn't bring myself to pay $60 for a tee shirt or $60 for jewelry you can buy on the street for $20 right down the block in Soho.
That said, there were some bright spots. The shoe department was fab!!! Some of the best vertiginous wonders I have seen this season and at good prices. Steve Madden should be concerned. Also, some of the jewelry was covet-worthy too...you can never have too much good costume pieces. One standout was this long part tribal/part rocker statement necklace that almost got me. They also had great Chanel-inspired pearls and bangles galore. Finally, the Kate Moss pieces were the best, but you do have to pay the price to have her name sewn into the collar...I would rather shop at Intermix for these prices.
So I give Topshop a C+ rating...I am being generous as I hope to be more inspired as time goes by!!!!
ps...shop online...the selection is better and you don't have to wait in line for a fitting room.
