So I have been hat obsessed lately...I just wrote about hats last week and now am compelled to write again but sadly for a different reason. I never write negative blogs, but once in a while I have such a bad retail experience that I really feel the need to spread the word. I was in Soho with Mom...it is Mother's Day after all and we walked into The Hat Shop on Thompson. Now, we are in a major recession and on the store is on a low traffic block, so you would think customer service would be a priority, but no...not at The Hat Shop. My very chic mom picked up at hat as soon as we walked in and the beyond rude salesperson or perhaps owner had the following welcoming words...no hello, no may I help you, but instead "you should never pick a hat up unless it is by the brim". OK, whether true or not, there is a nice way of telling a novice hat buyer. Then as my mom was about to try it on, she followed up with "that is a man's hat" and proceeded to go sit behind her desk. I was appalled!!!! Now here is the best part, I was wearing a fab straw hat so am clearly a hat lover or at least buyer...if you were in the hat biz, wouldn't you make every attempt to sell me something or at least be nice to me?
With all the choice out there today, who needs to be treated poorly? So I say SKIP The Hat Shop on Houston. There are so many other fab hat stores in NYC. Here are a few of my favs. Arth on Houston in Soho...not only is the staff lovely, but they have a great selection of Fedora's at good prices. I love the kitch at Barbara Feinman Millinery...fun East Village retro hat outpost. A good friend swears by Lisa Shaub in Nolita and I agree...the selection is spot on and the service is beyond fabulous (Hat Shop take a cue). And as always my dirty little secret is street vendors...if you are a hat novice and don't want to make an investment, buy one for $15 in Soho.
A couple last words to the wise...you will always catch more bees with honey than with vinegar. You never know how much someone is apt to spend (did you ever see Pretty Woman?). If you hate your job so much, then move on...life is just too short!!!!
