So what do you need this season to put a touch of the 80s into your wardrobe without looking like Cindy Lauper or Madonna circa "Borderline"...well, of course a little American Apparel.
So here is my 80s shopping list...all of the items you just gotta have this season and that American Apparel is serving up at 80s prices.
First and most important are leggings. Every self-proclaimed 80s child remembers them well (luckily the stirrup kind aren't back) and every 80s newbie is catching on to their versatility, comfort and even "fashionability" (yes, I made that word up). American Apparel has something for everyone. For the understated fashionista try the Cotton Spandex Jersey Legging ($26 or three for $63)...to the ankle, no bells and whistles...perfect with long tees, dresses, boyfriend blazers, pretty much everything...I wear mine to death. For the more adventurous, style girl, I love the Cotton Jersey Placket Cropped Leggings ($28)...the perfect transitional option that really will show off your fab shoes...a little more detail with a subtle button placket at the bottom opening...again anything really goes! Now for those of you who plan to really embrace the trend, you have to have the Nylon Tricot High-Waist Zipper Pant ($52)...a lot of edge, a lot of style...the zipper is really comfortable too. They have the requisite slashed options too, but I am not a fan...shredded tees are one thing, but ripped tights/pants are better left to the punk rock set.
Next is leather or in American Apparel's case faux-leather. Their Shiny Legging ($42) comes in several texture options. Black Eel and Black Boa for a subtle snakeskin texture and Lame Black for a smooth, high shine look. If you really want to step it up, try Night Fever Black for a slight disco ball look...lots of fun!!! If you are feeling especially racy, try the Shiny Late Night Mini ($32)...super sexy, so tone it down with black opaque tights and some booties...so rocker 80s!!! Finally if you love the idea of the mini, but just can't pull it off, you could try the Shiny High Waist Skirt ($44) in Black Boa...a little flirty swing-meets-edgy vixen...tone this down as well with some tights, ballet flats or flat over-the-knee boots.
Last but not least, how about a little "Members Only" flashback. I have to admit I love the Unisex Satin Charmeuse Night Jacket ($45). If you don't want to splurge on a leather jacket this season, but love the idea of a bomber over your dresses, with your skirts, with your denim, try this as a replacement. It comes in amazing colors...I love the Ivory. It is oh so fun!!!
As per usual, there is so much more to choose from, so I suggest you hit the store closest to you...more fun than shopping online. You can bring back the 80s without looking like a total throwback...choose your pieces wisely and mix them with your more modern items...don't spend a lot of money on trends ladies...absolutely no need when stores like American Apparel serve them up so very well.
PS...disregard the styling in the photos above...not suggesting you look quite so trashy disco.
